Trees are the oldest and the largest living things on earth.  Some are weird, some extraordinary, some gorgeous, and some shaped by the human hand to fascinate and amuse. Please enjoy these  images–or better yet, take a walk in the woods and greet them in person with appreciation.

As Patricia Hays suggested in the comments below, if you’re inclined, you can listen to Paul Robeson sing about trees while you meander through this post.  Thanks to Tom Reiter for forwarding the link.

This post is a group effort.  Here’s a lovely tree poem/prayer that has been going around the internet with these images.  Thanks to George for forwarding it to me:

An Ancient Prayer of the Woods

I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights,
the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun,
and my fruits are refreshing

droughts quenching your thirst as you journey on.

I am the beam that holds your house,
the board of your table,
the bed on which you lie,
and the timber that builds your boat.
I am the handle of your hoe,
the door of your homestead,
the wood of your cradle,
and the shell of your coffin.
I am the bread of kindness and the flower of beauty.

‘Ye who pass by, listen to my prayer: Harm me not.’

(A prayer used in Portuguese forest preservation for more than 1,000 years)

  1. Tom Reiter….that needs to be BEFORE the trees…so it can be listened to as one looks at them. I seen one type in Hawaii that amazed me…as I’m from the Missouri Ozarks. I really enjoyed these…ty to whoever did this…

  2. I agree, only God can make a tree. These were amazing pictures. Enjoyed every one of them.

  3. This is truly a case for God. Only God could make such a thing as the beautiful trees shown here. Thanks for sharing.

  10. This is why I dislike golf courses so much. Trees gone and replaced with unnatural grass that requires mowing, feeding and constant attention.

  11. Wonderful view of God’s handiwork…Beauty every way you look!
    Nature is my glory!

  12. Thank you so much! Those trees are so beautiful and really makes you realize what a wonderful world we have!

  14. Great shots, but the e-mail with the link referenced Joyce Kilmer’s poem, “Trees”, and referred to him as “she”. He was a soldier in the NY Irish Regiment and was killed in the 1st World War.

  15. are these trees real or are they helped out a lot by someone. its hard to believe they all grew so beautiful by nature alone. But they are great photo’s anyway
