Trees are the oldest and the largest living things on earth. Some are weird, some extraordinary, some gorgeous, and some shaped by the human hand to fascinate and amuse. Please enjoy these images–or better yet, take a walk in the woods and greet them in person with appreciation.
As Patricia Hays suggested in the comments below, if you’re inclined, you can listen to Paul Robeson sing about trees while you meander through this post. Thanks to Tom Reiter for forwarding the link.

The oldest tree on earth, great basin bristle cone pine, Oldest trees, over 5000 years old, in California

General Sherman tree, Sequoia Redwood, the largest living single-stem tree and largest living organism on earth in California

Jabuticaba, a Brazilian grape tree The fruit grows directly from the trunk and branches of the tree.

This post is a group effort. Here’s a lovely tree poem/prayer that has been going around the internet with these images. Thanks to George for forwarding it to me:
An Ancient Prayer of the Woods
I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights,
the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun,
and my fruits are refreshing
droughts quenching your thirst as you journey on.
I am the beam that holds your house,
the board of your table,
the bed on which you lie,
and the timber that builds your boat.
I am the handle of your hoe,
the door of your homestead,
the wood of your cradle,
and the shell of your coffin.
I am the bread of kindness and the flower of beauty.
‘Ye who pass by, listen to my prayer: Harm me not.’
(A prayer used in Portuguese forest preservation for more than 1,000 years)

I have always loved trees and these are the most magnificent pictures I have ever seen. Thank you for showing them.
Great, beautiful
ONLY “GOD” CAN MAKE A TREE.
BEAUTIFUL
Wow, amazing would love to have the opportunity to touch and see such magnificent wonders. Pity the famous Gerroa Bum Tree missed out on a spot.
AWESOME, EXTREMELY FASCINTING, INFORMATIVE. HOW CAN ANYONE DENY GODS EXISTENCE…. HE IS,WAS ANS ALWATS WILL BE THE ONLY CREATOR.
Trees are awesome. Some feed us, some clothe us, some shelter us, some awe us. After all that , they provide us with a stump to rest upon & heat to keep us warm. I, too, love them. Thanks for sharing.
Trees are God’s gift to Man, how we take care of them is Man’s gift to God. God works 24/7, man work 30 mins to shape it to suit his purpose. God won’t mind some fancy work . Both will enjoy the results of Topiary and trim. When Man and God cooperate and work together, the results can be astounding.
Kilmer had it right all along. Only God can make a tree. Jack
I am especially thrilled when God and man team up to make a special design in a tree.
Out of this world, yes only GOD can make a tree. All things are beautiful in the eyes of GOD
Truly an awesome group of photos…as others mentioned, a tree can be more than one thing. Thanks for sharing.
Obrigado pelo presente. Amo as árvores. Amei este momento por causa delas e por causa do idealizador desta magnífica apresentação. Fico imensamente agradecido.
Such wonders on our earth ,thank you,
Someone pretty special who also loves trees shared with me. Trees are truly wonderful. Other things go by the wayside but our trees keep reminding us how truly wonderful OUR GOD IS. Thank you Christine for sharing its beauty.
MAGNIFICENT SHOTS..ONLY GOD CAN MAKE A TREE.. HAVE SEEN SOME OF THESE ONES IN CALIFORNIA.. I have been an international photojournalist from New Zealand for over 45 years..
How awesome, how great our God is.
Nature is really so wonderful, so amazing and occasionally so pleasing and soothing that it puts a man’s heart in a position of trance. God had given really so much, not only on earth and sea but also in sky, that why man files in atmosphere like a bird and has even landed on moon and Mars and not looking for some life on some other planet. May be, one day science finds that but I am sure how and in what manner people living on this earth shall react to it and behave with those alien civilisation on some other planet. we should be thankful to God for creating all this and making us wonder and awe-struck on finding it. At the same time we also should not exploit nature too much like cutting of jungles in a big big manner that it has changed the way it used to rain some 20-25 years ago, but today people there are finding scarcity of water. European countries also exploit sea creatures in a big big manner and that may also create a big ecological problem in future. Some species of animals have already become extinct now. That should not happen, we all should think over it, a little bit seriously. All mighty God is really great, bountiful and gracious, but man hugely needs to learn to remain grateful to Mother Nature and God.
How can anyone see such magnificent sights as these and say there is no God? I have always loved trees, but had no idea of how many wonderful varieties there are. Praise the Lord for his beautiful creations.
Stunningly beautiful. They showed God’s amazing creations, much more amazing than we humble mortals on earth.
I absolutely adore these pictures. I have to ask though, the last one said it’s in S. Mexico, but the sign in front of it is in German. Do Germans run the tourist area there, or are there many signs in different languages? I had never seen it before and had to ask. Thanks!
You’re right. I don’t know what the truth is. I just got S. Mexico off the website where I found the image. You’re very observant.
Gosto de apreciar a natureza, conheço árvores com muita idade mas não tem semelhantes dimensões, o meu louvor artístico ao fotografo que fez estas fotos
It’s in Oaxaca Mexico.
The poem “trees” and the song express the
love of them well………
“as for me I shall never see anything as
lovely as a tree” and that sums it up. S
Thanks, Julie

I love trees, so I enjoyed this a lot. Some shapes of the trees seem to have had help from humans, but as a whole, they seemed authentic, especially the giant ones. Thanks for sharing.
It took my breathe away and all I can say is thank you Dusty for sharing God’s beauty.
Humbling. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The oldest tree in the world is around 5000 years old, give or take a few,…..right around the time of THE FLOOD….for those doubters!!!
Trees will likely still be here well after we have been removed. WD
