Trees are the oldest and the largest living things on earth.  Some are weird, some extraordinary, some gorgeous, and some shaped by the human hand to fascinate and amuse. Please enjoy these  images–or better yet, take a walk in the woods and greet them in person with appreciation.

As Patricia Hays suggested in the comments below, if you’re inclined, you can listen to Paul Robeson sing about trees while you meander through this post.  Thanks to Tom Reiter for forwarding the link.

This post is a group effort.  Here’s a lovely tree poem/prayer that has been going around the internet with these images.  Thanks to George for forwarding it to me:

An Ancient Prayer of the Woods

I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights,
the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun,
and my fruits are refreshing

droughts quenching your thirst as you journey on.

I am the beam that holds your house,
the board of your table,
the bed on which you lie,
and the timber that builds your boat.
I am the handle of your hoe,
the door of your homestead,
the wood of your cradle,
and the shell of your coffin.
I am the bread of kindness and the flower of beauty.

‘Ye who pass by, listen to my prayer: Harm me not.’

(A prayer used in Portuguese forest preservation for more than 1,000 years)

  1. Picturing the beauty of this planet before man’s self-righteousness shames me, but the righteousness of others to save GOD ‘s creation makes me smile. Imagine what it would have looked like, before us.

  2. I’ve been lucky to see a lot of these trees thanks to my Mom & Dad. I’d love to see them all in person. Thanks for the show.

  3. Harold of Ocala, Florida June 15, 2014 Being a wood worker, I can really appreciate trees and the beautiful products that are made from trees including buildings. I was fortunate to have been reared on a farm with beautiful woods all around. Lovely to walk in the shady cool woods on a hot summer day. Only our God could create such beauty. My wife Jackie designs beautifull furniture for me to build. How blessed are we.

  4. Thank you God for putting this beauty into your world to remind us of how kind You are. We could be living in a brown and dusty planet, but You chose to give us lots of beauty all around.

  5. I have been here a very long time(94) and in all my years, have not ever seen so much greatness created by our great Lord. Thank You So Very Much.

  6. it’s amazing such simple yet powerful beauty still exist in this day and age of mass destruction, population growth and industrialization. but in these stills, mother earth allows each of us an insight, !!!????!!!!!????, of being just an-every-day-to-day-tree.

  7. One of God’s greatest gifts to mankind. Thank you for this beautiful collection. Remember where wood comes from and how it has been used since the beginning of time……

  8. The collection is just so wonderful. Thank You!! We live in a community canopied by trees. I’m in love with every tree.
    I invite you to visit a tree that is on our list to show family visitors. It is in the 777 area Princeton Street, Orlando, FL. It grows up, up, up with many huge arms in all directions and grows back to the ground and along the ground and they rise again to form trees. A special feeling standing in its midst. It is also by dates documented with plaques.

  9. Thank you for taking the time to remind us of the beauty in this world. Sometimes we tend to forget; when all we need do is look at nature. These trees were beautiful. THe energy that flows from them is miraculous. Thank you Higher Intelligence!

    many years ago and we still enjoy.
    I feel a small part of His work because we planted 80 acres of Long Leaf Pines on our farm about 10 years ago. They are native to this area but not many around. They are so pretty as they grow!!

  12. Wonderful pictures! I have an intense interest in trees, and would LOVE to see more emails like this! Thank you!!!

  13. I so love trees. We live on 10 exquisitely beautiful acres adorned with hundreds of oak trees. My husband and I decided to plant some conifers, one of which is a Coastal Redwood. I love the conifers, and they surround a labyrinth we built. The Coastal Redwood told me its name was Breath of Heaven, and it indeed seems like a breath of heaven. I often dance with it when the branches are swaying in the wind. Trees are one of many of Gods gifts to us,.

  14. These are just breath taking and they say there is NO GOD. Well, they just have not seen this. Whoever they are

  30. God creates things a lot of us don’t get to see. These trees are one example of that. It is of utmost importance that we don’t take mother nature for granted and preserve what God has provided for us to see.

  34. Trees
    BY JOYCE KILMER
    I think that I shall never see
    A poem lovely as a tree.

    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

    A tree that may in Summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;

    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.

    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.
