Trees are the oldest and the largest living things on earth.  Some are weird, some extraordinary, some gorgeous, and some shaped by the human hand to fascinate and amuse. Please enjoy these  images–or better yet, take a walk in the woods and greet them in person with appreciation.

As Patricia Hays suggested in the comments below, if you’re inclined, you can listen to Paul Robeson sing about trees while you meander through this post.  Thanks to Tom Reiter for forwarding the link.

This post is a group effort.  Here’s a lovely tree poem/prayer that has been going around the internet with these images.  Thanks to George for forwarding it to me:

An Ancient Prayer of the Woods

I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights,
the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun,
and my fruits are refreshing

droughts quenching your thirst as you journey on.

I am the beam that holds your house,
the board of your table,
the bed on which you lie,
and the timber that builds your boat.
I am the handle of your hoe,
the door of your homestead,
the wood of your cradle,
and the shell of your coffin.
I am the bread of kindness and the flower of beauty.

‘Ye who pass by, listen to my prayer: Harm me not.’

(A prayer used in Portuguese forest preservation for more than 1,000 years)

  1. The wonder of God’s mastery is the simplicity of His touch.A most beautiful example of His greatness. Thank you …

  2. Ary ! This word meaning yes in Persian went to say yes also in Quechua (Incas official language as in Peru and Bolivia today)… if you are curious enough to know how / ask this Pyrmard (old man)

Yes ! Fantastic / wonderful / incredible / magnificent / …. yes / from the nature and in the nature / or if you prefer from the
    “man made God”

  3. WOW!!! WOW!!! How beautiful our PLANET is!!! EXQUISITE!!!!
WHAT a magnificent pictures of NATURES WONDERS you ‘ve greated!!!!

  4. Nunca pensei que pudesse existir árvores tão maravilhosas, obras divinas, impossiveis de imaginar.Só a natureza poderia fazer, o homem jamais. amei demais

  5. Have never seen anything so gorgeous……it’s out of this world.
Looking at these pictures, you know that there is a GOD.

  6. These are very unique. I have seen some weird ones before, but these are very weird and unique. Thanks for sharing them. Bob

  7. Overwhelmingly magnificent and beautiful! The visible gifts from God! Very humbling indeed!

  8. This is a real example of the power and beauty of our Lord and creator, mighty God’ Just beautiful and awesome.

  9. I think that I shall never see,
A poem as lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
against the Earth’s sweet flowing breast.
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair.
Upon whose bosom snow has lain
And welcomes the gentle touch of rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

  10. If extreme beauty proves the existence of God, then what does its’ opposite, extreme ugliness and evilness, prove? For me, seeing such incredible wonders of genetics and mutations makes me feel awestruck at such beauty — and at the same time sad that there are too many mutated humans who must feel more awestruck by the thought of money to cut down old growth forests

  11. I LOVE TREES. I say trees should be left alone to grow as they want, but everyone is always trimming them! I’ve seen two of the trees in this video. They were left alone to grow!

  12. THESE TREES ARE FANTASTIC. JUST RECENTLY TOOK THE DRIVE THROUGH THE ” AVENUE OF THE GIANTS ” & ENJOYED THE BEAUTIFUL REDWOODS.

  13. I live in California and feel blessed to be near those amazing miracles of giant redwoods–and the flora and fauna they support in surrounding woods.

  14. I would love to have a book of all these magnificent tree photos so in moments of stress or sadness , I could open this book & be at peace. Thanks to all those wonderful photos & whoever posted them!!!

  15. Can someone add a picture of the fabulous golden ginkos on the University of Tokyo Hongo Campus?

  16. Claire,
I found a wonderful image of them and will add it to my next tree post or a nature post. I don’t go back and add pictures because many people have already seen the post and would miss the new addition. I have a golden ginko in my backyard (I live in Northern California) It’s about 6 feet tall and 6 years old–they grow very slowly but it is golden right now. 🙂

  17. Awesome some left me with such a peaceful feeling our earth is so full of bounty. We should ALL spend our time exploring and loving it!

  18. Totally awesome and beautiful. I love the outhouse, I never had anything so fancy when I was growing up. Beautiful photos too.

  19. The outstanding tree pictures certainly show that there definitely is a Creator! No man can replicate such wonders!

  22. Here’s an English translation from Google. Thanks for the comment.
wonderful beauty that nature offers us, with true works of art and inimitable, for colors, landscapes, lights, flowers, plants, etc., even if enhanced by the imagination and attention of man and in their natural ambiante.

  23. waouuuuuuuuuu , Soooooooo beautiful !!
    Merci , Merci , Grand Merci ,
    bravo les photographs !!

  24. Isn’t it wonderful so many people around the world think the same thing!!!!! There is indeed a GOD to create such masterpieces—and we thought man was Gods final masterpiece. What fools these mortals be!!!!!!!
